Who Is A Marine Biologist?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Anyone involved in the study of plants and animals – both single as well as multi-celled – is a biologist. To take this further, anyone who studies marine life is called a marine biologist. For the layman, this could be confusing, as the word 'marine' includes within it a very large domain – all life forms existing in water. From this definition, it follows that the term marine biologist is a wide-ranging as well as confusing one. A person who trains rescued animals at a marine park could be a marine biologist, as could a person studying the different forms of marine algae.

To be a marine biologist, you have to first choose a specific subject of interest on which you can conduct your studies. While the term may seem to indicate a glamorous area of work, it may not be so in many cases. The glamorous guys – the people that are filmed studying exotic animals like whales, dolphins, and other such marine life forms do not form the bulk of the marine biologist community. These are a select few, actually. A large number of marine biologists do less high profile things, such as documenting the problems or reproductive cycles of unheard of life forms. Being a marine biologist requires extensive studying.
