Geographers coined the term 'Tarns' to describe the lakes present in the mountainous regions. These water bodies were a results of continuous glacial activity in the mountains and are found at an altitude of 5,500 meters and above in the Himalayas.
The Himalayan ranges, besides being home to a hundred lofty peaks also house an array of water bodies; lakes in particular. Many of these are located at the lower altitudes since the size of the lake varies inversely with respect to altitude. The Pangong T'so lake is the largest lake located on the Tibetian and Indian border at an altitude of 4600 meters. Other lakes located at the top include the Gurugogmar lake situates in Northern Sikkim and the Tsongmo lake situated near the Indo-China border.
