Lymph nodes swollen from infection should be tender, rubbery, movable under the skin. They should begin to go down after the infection (cold, sore throat, etc) is over. Lymph nodes swollen because of cancer or a tumor are often rock hard, growing, maybe stuck to the skin or other tissues.
