Historically the city is named after the founder of the nation and the first president of the United States, George Washington.  Washington D.C. (District of Columbia) was made the capital of the country in 1800 when the American parliament assembled there in the middle of November.  Before this, Congress met in eight different cities for holding the parliament meetings.  As a result, competition was tough amongst the eight cities to secure the seat of government.
