The best chat room i know of is the living room in my own home. Talking among family and close friends in the context of your own home . I have been told some disturbing things about young people being lured into dangerous situations.i just watched a documentary about a group of kids making suicide plans via the internet. Indeed one site told them how best to go about it. If you do go into these rooms be very careful.

Although "in person" conversations are nice, sometimes they don't work (such as long distance friendships). In these cases I would recommend any regularly filtered web forums or I am engines. Gaia online is just about the best online forum you can find. It has cute avatars you can use as well as guilds where you can find hundreds of people with the same interests as you. If IMing is more your thing, I would definitely recommend Trillion. It has handy plugins that allow you to talk to anyone via MSN, AIM, YIM, or ICQ simultaneously.
