What Are The Different Types Of White Cell In The Body Called?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

There are five main types of white cell in the blood and all work together to provide the body with an immune system that protects it against infection and disease.

The most common white cells are neutrophils which are large cells with a lobed nucleus. These cells are phagocytes - they engulf and digest foreign particles such as bacteria.

Next are the lymphocytes, which are round cells with a large  nucleus and very little cytoplasm. Some lymphocytes are B cells, which produce antibodies and some are T cells, which are involved in cel-mediated immunity.

Monocytes make up 6 per cent of the total number of white cells in the body and are large with a kidney shaped nucleus. They are also phagocytic and clear away the debris after an infection.

Easinophils are smaller with a lobed nucleus and are associated with allergic responses.

Basophils are the rarest white cells, making up only 0.5 per cent of all white cells. They release histamine, a chemical that is responsible for inflammation.
