Pet mice can die very suddenly. This is because they don't usually have obvious symptoms, and by the time we figure out what's wrong, it's too late. They also have very short life spans (1-2 years) and so you could possibly have bought a mouse that was already sick or old and thus this is not your fault. 

If you do get another mouse, you might want to get a few instead of one as company will help them live longer. Also, you need to feed and water them constantly. Make sure they have a warm, but not too warm, place to live. Also, make sure that they have a water supply always, as sometimes drippers placed in cages stop working.
