Michigan is a state in the United States of America situated in the mid west that is in the east north central part of the nation. The state got its name from Lake Michigan, the name of which was a French word for the Ojibwe term 'mishigami' meaning 'large water or lake'. Michigan is surrounded by four of the five Great Lakes, and as a result it possesses the longest fresh water shoreline in the country, as well as the most number of recreational boats in the country. Michigan is actually only a bi peninsular state and is at times referred to as 'the mitten' due to the shape of the peninsula.

In terms of area, Michigan ranks eleventh and in terms of population, it ranks eighth in the country. It was the twenty-sixth state to be officially incorporated into the union.
