    Monroe is the name of a town located in Orange County in New York, in the United States of America. As per the census conducted in the year 2000, it accommodated a total of 31, 407 residents. It is named in honour of former President of the United States, James Monroe. This town consists of two villages called Monroe and Kiryas Joel, and it also includes a major part of the village of Harriman, rest of which is comes in the town of Woodbury.

    The town used to be a component of the 'Cheesecocks Patent'. It was established in the year 1799 under the name Cheesecocks, and was renamed to its current name in the year 1818.

    Velveeta cheese was invented in this town, and a cheese festival takes place on an annual basis to commemorate this fact.
