Who Was The Last British Woman To Win The Ladies Single's At Wimbledon?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Virginia Wade won the Ladies Singles' championship in 1977 and has been the last British woman to do so since. She first learned to play tennis in South Africa and then moved to England when she was 15. Over her career she has won 55 professional singles titles and a total of $1,542,278 in prize money.

She ranked the world's top 10 continuously from 1967 to 1979 with a career total of 26 years. In 1987 she finally retired. In 1982 Wade was the first woman to be elected to the Wimbledon Committee, and in 1989 she was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island. Of all her wins Virginia Wade considers them nothing compared to the win in 1977 at Wimbledon.
