There are lots of recipes for this online. I've chosen this because it 's very similar to a recipe I've made myself and know it works. This one includes bacon, but if you don't want bacon just leave it out. You can also add a little cooked vegetable - broccoli is good - to the macaroni to make a full meal.

If you want to do it without a box, buy the type of pasta you want to use. Boil it, like you would if you were using the box. The cheese is the tricky. I'm not quite sure what you would do about that.
