I'm Traveling To London This Weekend. Will I Be Able To Use A Traveller's Cheque To Pay For Cabs?

Answer Question

Many places don't accept traveller's cheques; therefore I would suggest taking along an alternative form of payment just in case. Many cab drivers do accept credit cards. Be sure that your credit card can be used in the UK if you are from another country. A special pin number is usually required when making purchases in the UK. This secret code helps to keep your card safe because it must be entered into the computer before the card is used.

Taxi cabs vary in their payment methods. Therefore, the only way to tell for sure is to call or email a few to find out. Better yet, if you already know which cab company you will be using, find out specifically what payment methods you can use. This will save you a lot of hassle later. It is likely that you will find a safe and secure way to pay. After all, London is filled with tourists in your situation.

Some cab drivers might take a travelers cheque but it is most likely that they will only take cash.  Sometimes a cab is fitted with a card machine ( a bit like some New York cabs ) but very very few.  Cash is probably going to be the best option.

If you are planning on taking a long cab journey, it's probably best to have some tens and twenty pound notes.  Cab drivers will only rarely take a fifty pound note, and never for a short-ish journey.

If you would prefer a private car, you could perhaps hire one via the internet and pay over and through that medium.  Cabs tend to be very expensive, mini-cabs are cheaper, but only cabs operate from airports.

If you want to get from a major london airport into london, it may be best to just take the train, it's quick, reasonably priced and then you could just get a cab from the station to your hotel or final destination.

I'm sure there's a place or two that you could change some travellers cheques at the airport too!
