How Should I Write To A Letter Editor?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Letters to the editor should be written such that it gets published. Hence pay good attention to organizing the letter logically. Be very clear about statement of the argument you are against and also clarify your own position. Remember lengthy letters are not attractive and hence be as concise in your statements as possible. It is also advisable not to clutter the letter with multiple arguments in a single letter. You must put one argument per letter. Back up your arguments with constructive evidence to support it without being abusive or making personal attacks. Also include facts and figures as much as possible as this will strengthen your arguments. Include testimony from experts in the field if you can get any.

Proofreading the letter to ensure that the English is correct and there are no spellings or grammatical mistakes is a good practice and also it portrays a good opinion. Also try to sleep on your letter for a night such that you can re-read the letter in the morning and assure yourself what you are sending is what you really want to send. Sometimes sleeping over a letter can improve the contents. In the same token one should not delay sending it for too long such that the topic becomes stale.

As far as presentation, it should be a font size of ten or twelve not more. Short letters could be double spaced. In the end do not forget to close your letter restating your position. Do include your name, address, day time phone numbers. Also sign your letter. These information is necessary for the publisher to verify on who wrote the letter.
