The font is a vessel or basin, usually large enough for a baby to be held inside it for a moment and covered with water; although in fact it is more usual just to sprinkle the child (or sometimes adult) with "holy water". The font is usually kept in a prominent place near the front of a church, where people can see it and be reminded of their own baptised status. Its main significance,as far as I know, is as a vessel to contain water consecrated by the priest, which Christians believe has the power to purify you of sins and give you a fresh start.
