The British Virgin Isles or Islands are part of the overseas territories of Britain located in the Caribbean. They are to the east of Puerto Rico. The main islands are Virgin Gorda, Anegada, Tortola and Jost Von Dyke. They are totally around fifty. Only fifteen of these are actually inhabited. Totally they have a population of around 22,000 people. The biggest island is Tortola. Christopher Columbus was the first European to see these islands during his second trip to America in1493. The United States bought St Thomas, St John, and St Croix in 1917 for seventeen millions and they called them the United States Virgin Islands which the British later renamed the British Virgin Islands as they controlled them.

The British Virgin isles are a very popular tourist destination. They possess beautiful white beaches, shimmering turquoise waters and delicious Caribbean food. They also have great facilities for water sports, windsurfing diving, sailing, and fishing.
