A 14 year old boy would prefer a different type of pet then a 14 year girl. Giving a pet to a 14 year old is good idea as they can learn the importance of taking responsibility and being more caring at this growing age. An ideal pet for a 14 year old boy is a puppy or a kitten. Both these pets are fragile and need a lot of time, love and care. Puppies need to be toilet trained and fed personally. It could be any breed but the amount of work and responsibly that goes in to taking care of one is the same. The boy will learn values like friendship and become warm as a person.

A pet like a dog or a cat does make a girl always feel like she is with someone. The birds are a great way for a little girl to share her feelings and they are pretty to look at.

If it is a girl that is energetic and responsible, you may want to consider a puppy so she can train the puppy and also exercices with it. For an active 14 year old boy, I would consider a Labrador or a retriever (any pet that is active all the time). If their always at home ( and i guess lazy too) i would choose a lap dog a cat, or a rabbit. If the family is always out, i wouldn't buy one but two dogs because one will get lonely. If you just can't figure out which to choose, you might just want to ask him/her. Make sure you pick the right pet. When picking a pet, you might want to go to a shelter and pick one that was once homeless and is nice. If the animal was abandoned, the pet might let anyone take them in which will make that pet more attached to the owner(s). You dont want to buy one off of the Internet until you actually meet the pet in person. People tend to put animal on the Internet and sell a pet who is beaten or close to death. You would be better off going to a local shelter.
Puppies are always good pets no matter what age as long as you have the responsibility to care for it properly
