Answer Question

The Papanicolaou test, more commonly known as the pap smear is a screening test used in gynecology to detect abnormal cells in the cervix. A special tool called a speculum is used to open up the vagina in order to allow the doctor to view the cervix clearly, a sample of both the mucus and cells of the cervix are swabbed and examined under a microscope. Any significant changes that are seen may be followed up upon and if necessary treated in order to prevent cervical cancer. The test is designed to detect potentially precancerous changes in cells, usually caused by HPV or human papillomavirus which is transmitted through sexual intercourse. In countries where women are routinely screened, the rate of death from cancer of the cervix has been reduced by as much as 99%.
