How Can We Help People To Stop Smoking?

Answer Question

6 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Smoking is one habit that people do not realize it as a slow poison. Such habits are not given up easily and require tremendous will power from the person who smokes. Giving up smoking is a gradual process and not an abrupt one. If the person is forced to give up smoking he may fall back into this habit after few months or even years.

The way to make some one stop smoking depends upon the nature of the person who smokes. One way to stop a person who is sensitive is: show pictures of people affected with mouth or lung cancers with details and portray his probable future if he continues smoking. This person may start feeling sick about smoking mentally even though he may not show it outwardly. One can also challenge the people who are considered stubborn, to give up their habit.

Sometimes you can talk them into better ways of living if they are your close ones. You can put them on promises but do not force them to give up their whole quota suddenly. Reduce the number of fags they take up each day. Do not be over vigilant as this might lead them more into this habit. And, if nothing of the above works there are always homeopathy medicines and herbal treatments for chronic smokers.

Smoking is one of the hardest habits to give up because it's tied to many other habits, namely, drinking coffee, drinking alcohol, after sex, during sex, after dinner, first thing in the morning and so on. So, the first thing to do when you decide to stop smoking is to change your patterns in regard to these activities. Distraction is a major factor. I jokingly tell my smoking friends that they should see a lot of movies and take a lot of plane rides when they first start quitting. Try to stay clear of chain smokers because it's just too hard to resist temptation when everyone around is lighting up.
It's also important to understand that smoking has a deep emotional connection which means that when you quit, expect old issues/hurts to surface. Surround yourself with support. Join a group or ask your ex-smoking friends to help you in the initial stages. Giving up smoking is like losing a friend so expect to grieve and feel lonely, sad, etc.
On a more practical level, use whatever aids are available - nicotine patches, chewing gum, suck a lot of sweets, read about quitting, join a gym, line up a lot of social activities so you're not sitting at home bored with twitching finers. Burn off any tension that rises. Accept that it won't be easy but it matters and is worth persisting with.

As a former smoker what worked for me was cold turkey.  No patches, gum or any of that stuff.

Also, direct facts without hand holding or compromise is essential.

You are slowly killing yourself.  I don't want to go out to eat with you or visit you in your home as you stink from the smoke and your home stinks from the smoke.

An addict is an addict weather it be heroin or nicotine and you have to just say it like it is.

I think you should try hupnotism, which seems quite helpful. My boyfriend's brother tried it and just after 30 mind hypnotic pracitise, he is not smoking any more.

Stop?! How can we get the dummies to start. Do you realize the potential tax revenues that are generated? There's too many people on the planet. What's a few thousand deaths? Where's the loss? Keep puffing away nicotine fiends!
