The Taklamakan Desert lies in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China in Central Asia; the desert in ancient times lay in the path of the Silk Route which connected Europe in Roman times with the Far East.

Numerous archeological findings have been discovered in the region which indicate human settlements dating 5000 years from the times of the Bronze Age and Iron Age; one of the most significant archeological findings in Taklamakan has been of the Tarim mummies dated to be about 4000 years old which were found to be of Caucasian origin indicating contacts between the people of the far east with those of West Asia and beyond.

Artifacts, jewelry, manuscripts and other items discovered from the various archeological sites in the area lead to conclusions that the area was inhabited in ancient times by the Tocharians a people whose origin is not known and who spoke a language related to the Indo European group; the Diamond Sutra manuscripts discovered in a cave from which Indian and Buddhist influences can be discerned.
