What Does RDA Stand For On Food Labels?

Answer Question

RDA stands for Recommended Daily Allowance.  On food packaging, this usually indicates how many calories, or ho much of a vitamin/ nutrient a person needs to meet the requirements of an average, healthy person.
The allowance system is the result of long-term research, which is constantly being reviewed and it reflects an amount which is recognised to be adequate for 98% of the population.  (the other two percent have particular dietary requirements resulting from a medical conditions).
The guidance levels also take into account any known ill effects of high doses of the nutrient and the possibility that some vitamins and minerals may interfere with the absorption of others.
The RDA's can also help food manufacturers be clear about how they advertise food.  For example, a food can only be advertised as being 'rich in Vitamin C' if it contains more than 15% of the RDA figure.  So, misleading advertising can be minimised through the RDA guidance.
