How Do I Replace A Radiator For A 1996 Mercury Sable?

Answer Question

If it's the same as the '97 it's a big time pain in the neck. I have a well equipped garage and the repair manual and it's taken me over 3.5 hrs to get it ALMOST out. You'll have to remove the front bumper for starters which requires removing both front wheels a couple of plastic shrouds and a slew of screws/bolts. Then, there is a large bulkhead under the hood with tons of bolts which has to come out. Before you can do that you have to remove the hood latch assembly (mark location) and the headlights (all of my electrical clip-connectors broke). Once all that is done there's the power steering cooler that has to be detached and moved out of the way from under the car. I thought I was home free at this point but getting the hoses off the radiator itself was quite difficult because it's near impossible to get a pair of pliers onto the hose clamps in the available space. Finally I find myself here at 11:30 pm trying to figure out how in the heck to get the two transaxle cooler lines disconnected from the radiator. I'm pretty sure it requires a special tool which I'll have to wait till tomorrow to pick up (very frustrating). Long and the short of it is, if you're gonna take this job on be prepared for a potentially long and frustrating night. I hope it goes smoother for you than it did for me. Good luck. B.L.
