Why Does Hawaii Have Interstate Highways?

Answer Question

Maybe somebody's planning to build a bridge to California and didn't tell us?

    Neah....

It has to do with Federal funding; the Feds subsidize major roads.  Hawaii said at some point, "Hey, how come everybody else is getting help with their road schemes and we aren't?" (under the Federal schemes to fund motorway infrastructure between states).  So to be fair the Feds had to cough up money as part of their Freeway program, which was, after all, a scheme for building "Interstate" Highways.  So they had to be called "Interstates", because they were designed and funded to be just like the Interstates on the mainland.

Alaska (separated from rest of USA by Canada) and Puerto Rico (another island) also have "Interstate Highways".
