What Does The President Of Australia Do?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Australia does not have a President.
In Australia (where there was no rebellion against Britain as happened in the USA) the Westminster system of government is used, so Australia's top position is Prime minister. (same as the UK).
Australia has an appointed governor who is the official representative of the Queen (Australia is still in the Commonwealth), however the position is mostly ceremonial and the governor takes no role in the running of Australia.
There has been some talk about Australia becoming a republic and dropping this tie with the British commonwealth, but there's no actual need since Australia is already fully independent.
If that was to happen, then Australia would possibly change the Prime ministers title to that of President.
