It is on the Eastern Hill Site in Melbourne where you will find the St Patrick's Cathedral. The cathedral is renowned in the world because of its architecture; it is considered as a prominent example of the Gothic Revival style, a well-known style of architecture.

The cathedral has its history at par with that of Melbourne; the cathedral was founded only twelve yeas after the foundation of the city of Melbourne.

After the foundation of the city it was felt that the spiritual needs of the area must be fulfilled and keeping in mind that motive the colonial secretary of Victoria allotted a bock of land to the Roman Catholic Church. It was Augustinian Friar James Goold who arrived from Britain was responsible for the choice of the site of the cathedral in the eastern part of the city. During those days the catholic community of Melbourne comprises mostly of the Irish, the cathedral was also being dedicated to St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland.
