What Does Roquefort Mean?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The term Roqufort is composed of two words: roque and fort. This term as a whole does not carry any specific meaning. The first word Roque is a variation of the word roquet. This word was obtained from the word croquet. Croquet is game played for recreation or as a competitive sport. Roque was obtained by dropping the first and the last letters from the word 'croquet.' The second word fort is taken from the Latin word fortis. In Old French, it means strong or strength.

The name Roquefort stands as a brand name for a soft cheese. This cheese is prepared from sheep's milk. The cheese is named after the place at which it is manufactured. The place is Roquefort-sur-Soulzon in France. It ripened near the Roquefort caves.
