Therapeutic cloning is also known as Somatic cell nuclear transfer. It starts with the same procedure as used in adult DNA cloning. The resultant embryo is allowed to grow for 14 days. The stem cells are then extracted and encouraged to grow into a piece of human tissue. The end result is a human being, or a replacement organ, or a piece of tissue.
The first therapeutic cloning was accomplished in 2001 by Advanced Cell Technology.
