There is no certainty that you can ever be completely safe, but there are some things you can do which will decrease your chances of putting yourself in danger.
When outside alone, especially at night, avoid areas which you know have a bad reputation. Try not to be around too many groups of people who are just 'hanging around' and keep an eye out for anyone who may be following you or hanging about with no purpose. Always stick to well lit streets and avoid back alleys.
Keep a mobile on you in case you get into trouble and its also a good idea to keep a fiver in your pocket for a taxi. If you feel that you are being followed you should ring somebody to speak to while you walk to your destination. If you are very worried keep your keys in your hand to use as a weapon or walk into the nearest shop/building and ask for help or ring a taxi.
Always let someone know where you are going and how long you expect to be. Don't forget to observe the normal rules of crossing the road safely etc.
If you are in the house on your own remember to check and lock all the windows and doors before bed. Set the alarm if you have one. And if you are uncomfortable ask a friend to stay.
