Henry's first wife, Catherine of Aragon, was his brother's widow and bore him one daughter, Mary. In 1525 he divorced her, breaking from the Catholic Church in the process (as it would not allow the divorce) and disinheriting Princess Mary. As a result, many religious institutions in England were deprived of their power or even destroyed.
In 1533, with his reforms complete, Henry married Anne Boleyn, who bore her only surviving child, Elizabeth, in the same year. Desperate for a son, and also in love with Jane Seymour, Henry had Anne executed in 1536 on shaky grounds of adultery and treason. He immediately married Jane Seymour, who died in 1537 after the birth of their son, Edward, now heir to the throne.
In 1540 Henry married Anne of Cleves, whom he hadn't previously met. He took a dislike to her and soon had the marriage annulled, though they remained friends. His marriage to the much younger Katherine Howard lasted only two years, ending with her execution for adultery in 1542. Finally he married Katherine Parr, who not only survived but outlived him for several years after his death in 1547.
