I assume you are talking about personal banking. There is very little the banks can do or need to do. From their communication servers inward, there is no vulnerability. The only vulnerability is between your PC and those servers. For that, most banks use 128 bit encryption on all transactions. That's it. The only other thing they do is make things harder if you try to access your online banking account from a computer other than the one you normally use.

The risk you face is if someone steals your login id and password. Other than what I mentioned, there isn't much the banks can do. But they usually take responsibility for fraudulent access anyway. So, as long as you keep your spyware protection active, you will be relatively secure.

The banks do one extra thing with credit cards. They analyze a transaction to see if it fits normal use patterns. If the transaction doesn't fit your pattern, they will temporarily block it. Bottom line, never use your debit card online, only use a credit card. Its easier for you to dispute a charge then to get money back fraudulently taken from your checking account.

Would they use the Internet for commercial transactions? Not on your life. So the next time you send 5 mill. You shouldn't worry!!!!
