There are two ways you can propagate magnolias. You can propagate magnolias either sexually or asexually. The sexual propagation takes places by the process of sexual reproduction, i.e., with the production of seeds and their subsequent dispersal and growth. In magnolias, sexual reproduction is by the process of cross fertilization, meaning that the seed carries both the female as well as the male gene, and the male of one seed fertilizes the female of another seed.

Asexual reproduction is another form of propagation that we see in certain species of plants and animals. Asexual reproduction takes place when propagation of a species happens through organs other than the sexual organs. In magnolias, this form of reproduction can happen by different methods. These include grafting, cutting, tissue culture, and also layering.

There are two scenarios where you can use these two techniques. If you want a mere clone of the existing plant, you would use the asexual reproduction techniques. However, if you want to grow a hybrid variety, i.e. a plant that would have the different characteristics of two different plants, one male and another female, then you would employ the sexual reproduction technique.
