Does Food Reach Your Stomach Before The Breakdown Of Carbohydrates?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

No, actually your saliva contains an enzyme, called amylase, that begins breaking down complex carbohydrates before they reach the stomach.  Once in the stomach, digestive acids begin to secrete and take over digestion.

Technically, chewing is the first step to digestion, but chemically speaking, the reactions begin with saliva contacting the complex carbohydrates.
