Phosphate is PO43-, it is an inorganic form of phosphorus. Phosphate has a vital role in plants and animals in photosynthesis, respiration and forming the cell membranes in cells. It is the second most abundant mineral in the body after calcium. It can also bind with calcium to form calciumphosphate which is important for bones.
Phosphate is used in the cells to convert ADP which is a low energy carrier to ATP by phosphorylation (the addidtion of phosphate), which can then supply various parts of the cell with energy.
