The St. Lawrence River which flows from Lake Ontario is popularly called the Lake of Thousand Islands. The St. Lawrence River is 15 miles at its source and gradually narrows down to 5 miles in width and houses islands which are range in sizes. Located along the U.S- Canada border the Canadian islands are in the province of Ontario and the islands in the U.S are in the state of New York. In the late 19th century and the early 20th century the thousand Islands became summer vacation spot with the rich and famous. There are over 1865 islands in total and while some of them are large enough for residence the others are so small that they are home to one or two shrubs or trees. Typically any land mass which stays above water for a period of 365 days and supports life like a tree or a shrub qualifies as an island.

Also called the "Manatoana" or the Garden of the Great Spirit" by the Indians, the Thousand Island is a sport fishing paradise all around the year.
