When two neighbours claim to be the owner of the same piece of land, it leads to a boundary dispute. One of the best ways to solve a boundary dispute between two neighbours is for both of them to hire a land surveyor.

The land surveyor surveys the property and establishes the official boundary lines. If the two neighbours agree on these boundary lines, they may enter into a lot line agreement. This saves them the expenses they would have otherwise incurred on hiring a land surveyor.

However, if one neighbour has been using a plot of land for a particular purpose or for a particular period of time, he or she may gain the ownership of the property only through adverse possession and encroachers are liable to be sued in a court of law.
