The main characters in Shakespeare's 'Othello' are Othello, Desdemona, Iago, Cassio, Brabanzio, Roderigo and Emilia.

Othello and Desdemona are newlyweds, which is upsetting for Roderigo who is in love with Desdemona.

Iago hates Othello as he has recently promoted Cassio to a position that Iago wanted as his own. Iago and Roderigo plot to ruin Othello.
They start by informing Desdemona's father Brabanzio that Othello has used to witchcraft to get Desdemona to marry him. Othello and Desdemona convince a court that this is not the case and that they're in love.
Iago sees a chance of revenge by insinuating to Othello that Cassio and Desdemona are having an affair and plants her handkerchief on Cassio as proof. Othello begins to mistrust his wife and eventually kills her in a jealous rage.
Emilia, who is Iago's wife tells everyone of her husbands lies and deceit. Iago kills his wife.
Othello commits suicide out of guilt and grief and Iago is arrested and taken off to be tortured and probably executed.
