What Does Dentate Mean?

Dentate means tooth like. It refers to zigzag or toothed margins. It is like sharp teeth pointing outward. It is an adjective and is pronounced as den-teyt. It is called as dentatus in Latin. This term is usually and frequently used in botany and zoology. Therefore having tooth like projections is known as dentate. It has sculptured and small ridges. There are fishes and plants with dentate.

There is a shrub called Arrowwood Viburnum which has leaves with dentate margins. Likewise some Macadamia trees also have dentate margins on their leaves. They are usually sharp and coarse. There is something called a dentate gyrus in the brain and it is also used to refer to the teeth or the body structure of certain animals and fishes which are the further usages of this word.
