Tacoma is located by the sea. It is in fact a mid-sized urban port located in Washington's Puget Sound, at its southern end, on a peninsula. It lies 50 kilometers to the northeast of Olympia, the state capital, 93 kilometers northwest of Mount Rainier National Park, and 51 kilometers southwest of Seattle. As of 2005, Tacoma had a population of around 195,898. In the Puget Sound area, Tacoma is the second largest city, while it is the third largest in the state.
Ironically Tacoma has been listed as the country's most liveable areas, while also being rated as the country's most stressed out city. Its rating as stressed out was based on a 2004 survey on divorce rate, commute time, unemployment rate, violent crime, property crime, alcohol consumption, suicide rate, and self-reported "poor mental health". Recently the city was also listed as one of the country's most walkable cities.
Tacoma is also home to one of the US' largest urban parks, Point Defiance Park, and the even larger Wapato Park, which was designed in the late 1800s.
