If a woman suffering from syphilis becomes pregnant during any stage of the disease, Treponema pallidum could be transmitted to her child through the placenta, resulting in a miscarriage, stillbirth, or even congenital syphilis. All infants born to women suffering from syphilis will not necessarily be infected. There is a higher risk to the child in the early stages of infection. According to estimates women around half the pregnancies will be affected in women suffering from the disease for a few years. And half of those affected will result in still births, while the other half will result in prenatal death or serious congenital syphilis. If the mother's syphilis is untreated or treated after the 34th week the infant has a forty to seventy percent chance of infection.
