A lap round the running track is usually around 400 meters. The runners are spread out in their preliminary positions to make sure that every one runs the same distance. This is a sprint event and chances of using a tactic is quiet high.

The world record for 400 meters is currently held by Michael Johnson.
Mainly relays are run on the 400 meter tracks. The most common tactic used for the 400 meter dash is that the runners run really hard through the first curve then generally slow down through the first straightaway. They preserve their energy for latter part of the race and once they touch the second curve they start to sprint as fast as possible.

Since this is the longest sprinting event a lot of Lactic acid is produced in the runner's body which results in a numb feeling.
