Avoid using any artificial material to build a bird house. Birds instinctively avoid entering structure built of plastic, aluminum or glass. Wood is the most bid friendly of all the materials. It is also inexpensive, provides adequate protection from the elements and can be cleaned easily.
The bird house must have a sloping roof for rain water to fall off. The bid house should be located in a place where the sun hits it intermittently throughout the day. If it is constructed at an elevation, it will provide protection from snakes and rodents. The size of the various aerial entrances should be proportionate to the size of the bird. Otherwise the birds will be sitting ducks for predators such as owls and hawks. Make holes in the flooring of the bird house to prevent any water accumulation if it has rained overnight. The smaller birds are attracted to bright colors; these can be used to color the bird house.
