When a person buys shares or stocks in a company they get issued a share certificate which is an official document that specifies the number of shares in the company held. Once the number of shares is known you can also find out the market price at which the companies shares are being traded at, and figure out the monetary value of your shares. Another method is to contact the Company directly as they are required by law to maintain proper records of their shares, to whom sold, by whom held etc. These records are also maintained with the registrar of Companies. It may be possible that this information is not always up to date and in that case you can look this up with the Stock Exchange where the company is listed.
