This is a very broad question, as there are a great many short stories available out there in the English language and they are often categorized according to genre, or by author. Whichever genre, or author you may be interested in, I would suggest that you look for these works in your local (or school) library, and not online, as it is often very useful to see a short story within the context of a larger anthology, rather than in isolation on the web.

If you have any interest in classical suspense and horror stories, I recommend Edgar Allan Poe. Poe was an excellent American poet and author during the Romantic period. He wrote a wide range of short stories, and anthologies of his works are widely available--you should not have trouble finding them in your library. Of these stories, I can recommend "The Black Cat," as well as "The Pit and the Pendulum."

If you prefer something more contemporary, I suggest the writings of Flannery O'Conner, an excellent American author of short stories, who wrote most of her works during the mid-twentieth century. Her works often examine life in the southern United States. I especially recommend a short story entitled "Revelation," which examines hypocrisy within society and human relations. The story is actually quite funny at times, but also very profound in its message.

One of the kings of the short story was William S. Porter, who wrote under the pen name "O. Henry." He specialized in short but memorable situations that often ended in a twist or ironic ending. Among his classics: "The Ransom of Red Chief" (a hilarious story of a a kidnapping that goes wrong), "The Gift of the Magi" (a touching and romantic Christmas story), "The Cop and the Anthem," and "The Last Leaf."

Ambrose Bierce's "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" and Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" are other famous short stories that have striking endings.

      F. Scott Fitzgerald is best known for his novels, but he wrote some great short stories, such as "Bernice Bobs Her Hair," "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," and "A Diamond As Big as the Ritz."

Ernest Hemingway's "The Snows of Kilomanjaro" is superb. He also has some fine stories in the collection IN OUR TIME.

If you're looking for a mystery, go for "The Adventure of the Speckled Band" by Arthur Conan Doyle. It's one of the best Sherlock Holmes short stories. Another GREAT mystery short story writer was G.K. Chesterton; you can't go wrong with ANY of the Father Brown stories, in my opinion, although I really like "The Invisible Man."

      Hope this helps!
