For Windows, you can download via anonymous FTP at ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/ . The .tar.gz file extension means packed with tar and compressed with gzip. The .exe or .zip extension indicates files were packed and compressed with zip.

There is also a comprehensive list of graphical interfaces for most operating systems on Tim Mann's web site www.tim-mann.org

Apple Mac users should take a look at this directory listing of Mac-compatible chess games, which includes master strength chess software, GNUChess and the Mac version of HIARCS, the former world champion chess program.

For Linux users, check out Knights Chess. It requires the K Desktop Environment but check the latest requirements as other software may need to be pre-installed first.

But among the better known software titles for Linux are Crafty, which can be downloaded from Bob Hyatt's ftp server , and GNUChess . For more on Linux and chess software visit Robert Pawlak's site
