Usually after the egg has started into the incubation process, in eight days you can tell if there is a chick in the egg. I take a good strong flashlight and put aluminum foil over the end and poke a small hole in it just enough that the light has a small hole to come through. Go to a completely dark room and put the egg at the end of the flashlight. If you see a small black dot with what looks like veins running in all directions then you have a chick. If the hen hasn't sat on the egg or you haven't put it in a incubator then you most likely won't have a chick.
