I Have A Not Quite 2yr Old Pit Bull/Great Dane Mix, Who Doesn't Realize His Size. He's Very Hyper And Jumps Around Like A Jack Russell. Is There Anything I Can Do To Calm Him Down?

I love my dog, he's really a sweet baby, but he's so big that when he plays, and jumps around, he can really hurt someone. He's good in public, it's mostly at home that he gets hyper. My boyfriend wants to give him human cough syrup or aspirin, but that sounds fishy to me. I'm looking for some real answers.

Do not give dogs human medicines as a general rule. Neither of your BF's suggestions would be safe. A drugged dog would still be hyper with the additional hazard of being extra clumsy and maybe altered character. You need to ignore him totally when he is acting excited, don't even look or speak to him. Wait for him to calm down then praise and give him a treat - but in a calm way. If you can't do this alone then I suggest training classes that will help teach him to look on you as the pack leader, rather than just his mum.

Good luck on the hyper part, but never give a pet People medicine unless told to by your vet. It can kill them. Pets can not eat all types of people either. Just like some plants, some foods are very toxic to dogs and cats. Some that I know of are; Chocolate, grapes and raisins.

Your dog needs more exercise! I long brisk walk or even better is an on leash jog to settle them down. Fetch and different games are great but get them excited instead of calming them down. If you want to burn a ton of energy give your dog a hard core session of fetch to drai9n energy and then a brisk 1-2 miles walk to cool/calm down. If you are in a hurry and can't spend a long time get your dog a back pack. Put weights equaling 10% of his weight in it for him to carry. Your walk will be much more productive. But, don't use it all the time as a measn to walk less. Your dog will just get stronger and require more weight and longer walks. It is best to use the backpack only when you have to.
