When you write about a 2x9 array, and a 5x9 array, what comes to mind is sets of cubes. I think of the 2x9 array as being 18 cubes arranged in a rectangle that is two cubes in one dimension and 9 in the other. If the 5x9 array is similar, but 5 cubes in the short dimension, then when you put the long sides of these arrays together you have an array that is 7 cubes by 9 cubes. The 45 cubes of the 5x9 array add to the 18 cubes of the 2x9 array to give a total of 63 cubes in the 7x9 array.
