A great way to keep informed about events and activities in your region is to browse through neighbourhood newsletters, weeklies and biweeklies. These publications are usually free, and complimentary copies are often available in major supermarkets, convenience stores, on street corners and they are sometimes distributed to houses in residential areas. The nice thing about these publications, is that they focus on local news and they each contain community calendars. They also list public, or community services available in your borough. These may include recreational facilities, cultural clubs, services for the elderly and other information on upcoming events.
Another excellent source of information is to watch your local television news cast. In North America, these are usually on at 6pm, and they generally focus on municipal, state or provincial affairs, rather than on national and international news.
You can also use online tools such as Facebook, Craigslist and Myspace to find out about groups, events and activities in your area. In each case, there are local pages, networks or groups that allow you to discover all that your town or neighbourhood has to offer.
