When Was Gillingham Football Club Founded?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Gillingham Football Club was founded in 1893, although they were originally named New Brompton FC which consisted of many players from the junior football side of Chatham Excelsior FC. The club was created due to the success of the junior side and local businessmen met in the Napier Arms pub to discuss the possibility of charging admission to watch their football side.

New Brompton started out in the Southern League Division Two but were quickly promoted to Division One. They changed their name to Gillingham Football Club when the borough of Gillingham was expanded.

Since the early days, Gillingham Football Club has attracted a multitude of famous players including Micky Adams, Steve Bruce, Tony Cascarino and Gavin Peacock.

The club has always played it's home games at the ground of Priestfield Stadium which has a capacity for approximately 11,500 people. Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club also shared this ground during the late 1990s.
