As a fellow 5.0 owner I can tell you the best thing to do would be to take it to the shop and have a fuel injection service done to it and have them change the fuel filter to start with. Then have them check for any other potential problems.

Running an F.I. system out of gas is always a problem if it happens! The injectors are sensitive to picking up dirt and other junk that ends up on the bottom of the fuel tank so running it out of fuel can be a pain in the b*tt! I think that once the F.I. service and filter are changed you should see a vast improvement. Any advice given about air in the fuel lines may be right and maybe not, but I DO NOT recommend doing it yourself if you are not already familiar with how to do it. Screw up the injectors and you'll wish you had allowed a shop to do it

    Good Luck!

A return style F.I. system will bleed air out of the system in seconds since it always bypassing the majority of fuel back to the tank. I am guessing this is a ford. bantam71 has it right!

You have air in the fuel lines and need to bleed them, plus change the fuel filter. If it is fuel injected you must bleed all the injectors, so only clean fuel and no air comes out. It can be a major effort if you don't know what you are doing, but, it is simple. Don't strip the injector heads, this would be a problem. Just take your time.

You can buy fuel injector cleaner first and change the fuel filter yourself and might find that eliminates your problem. If not then go to the mechanic. It mostly likely is cloged injector, and you might get it to clear itself. Cheaper than going to a mechanic.
