I have lots of fantails in my ponds and this time of the year the females start swelling up because they are full of eggs and from middle September till about November then you will see that the males will start chasing her so she can squirt the eggs out and he can fetilize the eggs with his sperm.

I had a pet fish like this, but sadly she passed away, so I find a very strong urge to help you.
Here are some of the answers and causes:
- My fish ate some of the pebbles as they were small enough to fit in her mouth, and she got really scared and freaked out.
- My Mum took her to the vets, and they said it could of been heart disease or something like that, lung disease could be a cause too.
If I were you I would visit a vet immediately.
